The original Camino de la Cantera 111 house was built in 1967. After some transformations, the current owners implemented an accurate stylish renovation aiming to recover and reinterpret the mid-century style, as a sincere homage to this epic moment of domestic architecture history.
The house, which is distributed in two levels, seeks a rich inside-outside dialogue all along the different spaces. At the ground floor, the garden is conceived as an artificial nature integrating the living areas around the kitchen. The upper floor distributes the private spaces seeking the pleasant views to the valley and the mountains from every opening.
Although authorship is not confirmed, facts invite to think that the original project could belong to the prestigious architect José Ibáñez Valdó, ancient dean of the architects association in Alicante and one of the most prolific authors in the region. In any case, the simplicity and rational organisation of the structure is an honest tribute to the spirit of Modern Movement since openness, light and comfort are characteristics of the house.
In fact, the open-space organization is the result of the structure mixture of load bearing walls and metallic beams, offering as a main benefit the natural lightning of all the spaces. The way by which light hits the surfaces in the morning, noon and afternoon makes evident the evolution of time all along the day, also showing the nuances in the seasons passing.
With an elegant sense of sobriety, the furnishing selection incorporates both industrial and handcrafts reinterpretations of classic pieces of modern design. That is how, for example, the natural wood pieces of Danish design combine perfectly with typical aspects of the Spanish culture, like the fresh terrazzo flooring.
More than a combination of spaces this house is a way of living. The importance of being ‘at home’ is here celebrated exploring the many ways one can feel comfortable in its own privacy. Something that can be accomplished in the diverse and pleasant places that are here ready to be lived.
